ponnapa prakkamakul พรนภา ปรักกมกุล 陳可意 (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Massachusetts. Born and raised in Thailand, she is a third-generation member of an ethnically Teochew Chinese immigrant family. Her extended family of artists and musicians deeply shaped her artistic sensibility. In watching her mother diligently make drawing paper from mulberry paper pulp, silk cocoons, and tree bark, ponnapa came to understand that the essence of art begins long before the blank page and continues to evolve beyond the artist’s hands. This understanding inspires her community-engaged approach to artmaking and public art, in which the co-creation process becomes an opportunity for shared expression, connection, and discovery. Drawing inspiration from her multicultural background, ponnapa’s work explores the relationships between people and places focusing on cultural displacement, identity, collective memory, and belonging. Using found materials foraged from landscapes to paint and stories collected from local communities, ponnapa aims to create place-specific artwork that telling stories of the place and amplifying voices from those communities.
ponnapa holds a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture with honors from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture with First-Class Honors and a Gold Medal Award from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. She has received recognition for her artistic and community-based practice, including the Leadership in Design Equity Award (Sasaki Foundation 2025), Inspiration Award (Asian Community Development Corporation 2024), Best in Show Award (Fay Chandler Emerging Art Exhibition 2022), Innovative Solution Award for Creative People Leading Climate Action Exhibition (Augusta Salvage Gallery 2021), among others. Her past residencies and fellowships include the Fallingwater Institute, Boston Center for the Arts, Boston Public Art Triennial Accelerator, David Bethuel Jamieson Fellowship at Provincetown Community Compact, Mount Auburn Cemetery, Residence Lab at the Pao Arts Center and Asian Community Development Corporation, Vermont Studio Center, Urbano Project, Umbrella Arts Center, and Manoog Family Artist-in-Resident at the Plumbing Museum. Her work has been featured in the Boston Globe, Boston Arts Review, GBH.
