Chinatown Symphony

The mural is part of Experience Chinatown Youth Mural Program 2026 organized by Pao Arts Center. The mural was designed and painted by 4 Bloomberg Art Interns and 3 youth artist volunteers under supervision of local artist ponnapa prakkamakul and program manager, Yolanda Yang.

This mural demonstrates different aspects of what makes Chinatown abundant by incorporating the food, history, greenery, and culture into one painting. During the course of six weeks, eight youth muralists immersed themselves into Boston’s Chinatown through on-site sketching, community engagement, local artist workshops, archival research, and studio collaging. Inspired by these waves of knowledge, the mural is sprawled like a traditional scroll painting. Viewers follow a sound-wave that weaves each theme together, similar to stories of Chinatown commonly passed down through oral history from one generation to another.

Following the horse into the year of the goat, the mural contains imagery of all twelve zodiac animals. Each panel contains its own lantern to bring into the New Year, as well as cultural blessings in each of the muralists’ own languages, representing the diversity of our community. The animals travel through a rich natural landscape blooming with flowers and history, ultimately arriving at the mouth of a hungry Fu lion, filled with the abundant foods that can be found around Chinatown. Every viewer has the opportunity to discover hidden personal stories in the details.
